Millennium Edition - WINS ???

By rgilbert ·
I am setting up a PC (Windows ME pre-installed) for a user that wants to access our NT LAN from home. Normally (using Win9 we enable WINS as well as DNS when setting up (this works).

It is supposed to be in My Network Places>TCP/IP properties, but all that shows is DNS. If I add a Protocol (making 2 TCP/IPs), I do see WINS and there seems to be no way to get the WINS to show without adding both protocols.

After configuring and rebooting, it defaults back to the original TCP/IP withoutWINS. I have tried every combo I can think of with no success.

I'd like to resolve today ... any help appreciated ... Thanks.

Strange...the copy I'm running, the network applet looks identical to what it was in 95/98. Have you tried going in there insted of my network places?

Sounds like you're looking at a tcp bound to something other then a NIC...like a modem.

Thanks Mark, but I've gone into the network applet and it is the same. I do get the same as in Win95/98 when I add the tcp/ip a second time, still no joy on the reboot. There is no NIC is the PC, only a modem, but this is the way I have several others (Win95/9 configured successfully.

Are you using DHCP? If so Me may default to a DHCP assigned WINS server.

Just got by my me machine...and installed a dummy dun connection to see what it did and it did the same for me. ONly thing I can think of is that it's some sort of security feature to allow you to *not* configure those in the control panel but rather locally in the dun connection.

Unless there's a reason you haven't mentioned yet, you should be able to go into the connectiod properties under dialup networking and then the networking tab then the TCP/IP settings button to configure both the DNS and WINS servers in there.

You can get to the same place by going into the internet properties, connection tab, choosing the dialup and clicking on settings and then properties button on the bottom of the following screen

Good luck

Thanks Mark ... did go into DUN and configured DNS & WINs. Same result. I can dial up and ping anything (using IP Addresses) on the LAN but cannot map anything nor ping using workstations Name. It definitely seem to be a WINS issue, but haven't figured a way around it (yet). I'll keep plugging ....
