modem removed unavailable device (COM1)

By tucker.michaelr ·
I have a Dell 4550, with a conexant modem, we just loaded windows xp pro, sp3 on. We have no conflicts in device manager, but whenever we go to connect to Internet through dialup, I get the above error. I have disconnected the modem, I have reinstalled the drivers, and still the same issue. Your help would be appreciated.

is this an external modem or internal?

if internal, put it into another slot and let windows rediscover it.

Check Dell website for BIOS update as well as latest modem drivers, assuming that the modem came with the computer.

Did you install the Correct Device Drivers for this Modem?

Dell list 7 Possible Drivers for this Model computer.

You could also try opening the Phone & Modem Options in the Control Panel under the Classic View and testing and configuring the Modem from there. You may have a Software Conflict occurring as generally these Modems are set to Comm Port 3 not 1.
