Modular Bay problem

By bau_20050392 ·
The following message appears when my brother's laptop boots up:

The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified. It maybe not be completely inserted or may have some other problems.

... ASAP

Can't diagnose if we don't know anything about the system.

Sounds like a laptop with swappable module bays ...

On the old Clevo chassis, the user could remove the DVD drive and insert a second hard drive or remove the first hard drive and swap it for another optical drive to boot from.

I suggest you power down this laptop, sitit on its rear end (at the back of the closed screen lid) and examine each device bay: floppy drive, hard drive, optical drive, card reader module.

Check that they are each flush with the sides of the chassis, with nothing proud of the dimensions of the unit. If anything is sticking out, gently but firmly push it back in, then power up again.

The laptop may have had a physical bump that has dislodged one of the modular units. That would explain the error message from the POST sequence.

Let us know how you get on. :)
