Monitoring Internet

By lylea42 ·
Currently have Win98 workgroup with 8 workstations. One workstation connects to the internet and the rest use Internet Connection Wizard to connect to ISP. I am trying to find a way to monitor Internet usage and block certain sites from all users without having to switch to Win NT or 2000 and using a Proxy Server. Anyone have a solution!!!

Monitoring Internet

Monitoring is kind of tough, but built into Internet Explorer is the content advisor, under "tools" on the menu bar. It's kind of a bear to keep updated, and has to be configured on each workstation, but it's free, and gives you a rudimentary protection, especially if there are sites you do specifically want to block, like www.Iwannabeapunk.com ( just an example ).

There are several companies that offer a web-based monitoring service for free, among them www.dotsafe.com, but again, it has it's drawbacks, like advertising.

The reason why I mention dotsafe.com separate is that I know the product works, as we use it in several of our schools, but I've never personally tried the free at home version.

www.we-blocker.com is another, but again, haven't tried it.

Other "free" solutions are out there, but as I'm sure you know, noting is totally free.
ad banners, embedded pop-ups, free versions that mysteriously quit after 30days if you don't register etc.

I have trieds to use we-blocker and it didn'y provide me with the security I required. I need something that will allow me to block ceertain site from being accessed from the client machines. Also after I removed the we-blocker software I no longer can connect from the client workstations!!!

I have a product for you that may be acceptable. It is an active server based program that will allow you to restrict time of day usage for each individual user on a user by user basis, monitor how they have spent their time on the "net", limit amount of time spent, and automatically notify you when any of the parameters you specify have been violated and alarm the user that the manager will be notified. As well as capturing a page by page trail of where each individual user has been. All thiswithout having to install additional hardware, expensive software, or incur administrative manhours to manage and monitor. Please contact me for all details.
