move databases - sql 7 to sql 2000

By mcgrath.b ·

We are in a bit of a pickle. We have sql 7 running on a p2, 256mb ram, NT 4.0 server. The server is getting a tremendous amount of traffic each day so we need to upgrade to a better server (hardware). We are at a standstill as we are unable to us any of the methods posted here:

We are unable do the deed via DTS on the new machine (we have tested with several). As well, we are unable to export any scripts. The backup is not working correctly either...

We are thinking that we have to build everything from scratch?

Any information or suggestions would be great!!

A bit more info

Can you see the sql7 server from the new one ?
sql7s backup is not working correctly, or you can't restore it on 2000 ?
Why can't you export scripts ?
Have you looked at using BCP, exporting to text and importing.

What about installing sql7 on a new box, moving the database across and then upgrading to 2000.

The procedure mentioned in the article could work in theory, but it's very fragile and in my opinion a last resort.
