Move NT HD's to a new machine

By jbk1009 ·
What is the easiest way to protect my setup of NT server in the following condition?

I have a P3 450 system with 51 MB PC100, moving to P4 2.4 system.

But I want to save that information and configurations completely. So I want to move my twohard drives in there entirety to the new machine.

How can I best accomplish this as I am fairly confident that just moving the drives will cause me problems?

Thanks .

JB

I think that you will have major problems if you only move HDD's.
Post more detail about your old server. Is a PDC, BDC or standalone server?

As you know WinNT is not an plug and play OS. I don't think that you can very easy determine the existing instalation to work on a new hardware configuration. You speak about a server, I don't think that you wish problems when you put it online.
Ifis a standalone server I recommend you a fresh install.

First, make a good backup of at least the system files on the server.

Then, create a folder, and download the latest drivers for the hardware in the new server chassis to that folder.

Finally, just before the last shutdown on the old chassis, go to device manager, and remove ALL of the hardware devices.
If needed, go to add / remove programs, and remove related programs.

Then, go through hardware detection, and driver installation on the new chassis.

Since you have acquired the P4 system already, why not buy an extra harddisk ?

Make the new P4 a BDC. Promote it to PDC as you have installed NT system on the new box. Old box retained as BDC.

Whenever something goes wrong, you still have your BDC. Try the new server box for several weeks / months. As the confident grow, you could now move the hdd to the new system.

Why don't you use that approach instead of choosing a risky one ?
