By bibi54 ·
I have email on a dead computer but good HD.
How can I move maill & address book from HD to my current computer?
Both are Win XP.

You need to move all the .dbx files (containing your mail) and the .wab file containing address book. Both will be located in C:\Documents and settings\<name>\Application data.

To make it easier use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard in Accessories to backup and move data from one PC to another.

file & transfer wizard requires logon to old computer to collect data. Old mobo is fried, but I have HD hooked to external drive via USB.

My mail data is in c:\program files\outlook express\mail & address book.

I drag&dropped folders to new computer.

But OE 6. does not recognize old dbx files or wab either!

btw - am "old" COBOL programmer & more familiar with IOCS than windows.

The default folder for the .DBX files is NOT the same as the program files. Also, you CANNOT just drop the .DBX files onto the hard drive and expect OE to find and use them.

Create a new folder under My Documents named oldmail.
Move the old DBX and Address book files there.

Open OE.

From the File menu, select Import, then either Address Book or Messages.
Guide the Import Wizard to the folder with the old DBX files and import the messages or address book.

That should take care of things.
