moving e-mail box

By dmiller ·
How can I safely move a users e-mail from a broken machine to a new box, without losing contacts or e-mail. If I could get the steps to do so would help considerably.

Depends on what server and client software you are using and what is broken (client or server).
Suppose you were using Outlook 9x/2000 and Internet Mail. Try finding your user's personal folder file (search for *.pst) and/or offline folder file (search for *.ost). Copy this file(s) to new computer, reinstall Outlook and add Personal Folders to your profile. Point your Personal Folders to the file you just copied.
Good luck.

It really depends on the email program and how broken the machine is. If the machine can function well enough to perform some simple tasks you can export the mail and contacts via the export utility in the file menu. (This works in either Outlook, Outlook Express or Netscape) Other wise you will need to find the .pst file which is usually located in the profile in question under the following path...application data - microsoft - outlook. If you are using netscape you can just copy the entire netscape directory.

Hope this helps.
