Moving Exchange 5.5 to another domain

By kbdavis ·
I have Exchange 5.5 running on an NT domain and want to move/upgrade to 2003 on a Server 2003 Domain. What steps should I follow to ensure a smooth transition?? Should I move the 5.5 and then upgrade??

You will not be able to move Exchange 5.5 into an Active Directory forest.

You will need to set up the AD forest.

Run the Exchange prep.

Use a tool like Quest Migraiton Suite to migrate user accounts, mailboxes and public folders is a good idea.

Gothcha include:

Trying to use the native Microsoft tools to perform an interorganizational migration. It won't work. Don't even try.

Users with multiple mailboxes. In AD, users are mail-enabled and the mailbox is simply a holding spot for the mail. So each user has one mailbox and that is it in AD. You will be most likely creating additional user accounts and/or using the Send As and Send on Behalf Of features.

Remember in Exchange 2003, the forest is the Organization. If you need more than one named mail domain, use SMTP virtual domains. If you need more than one organization, then you need more than one forest.

If you are not familiar with Active Directory, do not attempt a migration without practice. Hiring a consultant to perform the migration and teach you how to do it will be a much better use of resources than calling in a consultant to clean up a disaster.
