Moving Exchange Mailboxes

By sdr0715_z ·
Here is my network setup:
Exchange 5.5 Server running on a Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller. The DC is also running AD, DNS, DHCP and WINS. I've successfully introduced an exchange 2003 running on a windows 2003 server into my exchange 5.5 organization. I am trying to move user mailboxes over to the new exchange 2003 server using the move wizard in exchange, but unable to. The event viewer is giving me the following errors:

Event I 9175 - THE MAPI call "Open store" failed with the following error: the information store could not be opened. The logon to the microsoft exchange server computer failed ID no: 80040111-0286-00000000

Event I 9167 - Unable to get an administrative interface to the mailbox store on server DDS-Design error: The information store could not be opened The logon to the microsoft exchange server computer failed

Event I 1008
Event I 8197

Event I 1005 - 0xc1050000 - network problems preventing connection to the ms exchange server computer. M<API was unable to load the information service emsabp.dll be sure the service is correctly installed and configured. MS exchange address book id no: 00040380-0000-00000000 occured

I'm not sure if this is also part of the problem that I cannot move mailboxes but, Outlook is still pointing to the old Exchange 5.5

I have also read that installing Exchange to a DC, running all services in my DC and AD is not a good IDEA, I am wondering if I need to promote my Windows 2003 server running exchange to a Domain Controller or upgrade my 2000 DC to 2003.

Please Help

First I have to say that I never like running anything on an exchange server other than just exchange. That being said it sounds like you have a rights issue. So, is the server that is running exchange 2003 in the same domain as the 5.5 server? (have to ask) 2nd is the account you are using to move the mailboxes have the required rights on both the 5.5 server and the 2003? We are not just talking about "admin" rights to the server. 5.5 has its own internal rights as well as the domain rights so they have to be sufficent to do the job.

BTW Outlook has nothing to do with any of this.

Patrick,
Thank you for your reply. Yes the servers are running on a single Domain. I've used the Administrator account that is built-in in AD. I've also used the same account to install 5.5 and 2003, the same account is a member of Domain Admins, Enterprise Admins, Schema Admins and Exchange Admin. I've followed the MS Migration instruction to the letter, but still not working.

YOu have to install a Active Directory Connector that connects the Exchange 5.5 environment to Active Directory. Then you will be able to move the mailboxes.

THis will give you an overview of what it does.

Best I can say atm is this:

Below are few things you might need to know

Migration from Exchange 5.5 to 2000/2003 (Separate Organization)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328809

Migration Wizards for Exchange 5.5 and 2000 to Exchange 2003

Considerations when you upgrade to Exchange Server 2003

There is no straight forward way for any migrations. Understanding the concept will save you from many problems during and after migration. The article below is about migration from 5.5 to Exchange 2000 but if you gone through the concept and understand the different between 2003 and 2000, you can adopt the steps.

Good luck and .. Please do trial (lab) first. Once you think you can do, perform many types of backup such as PST, offline backup and backup using tapes. I usually advise my clients and friends to avoid in-place upgrade unless they really do not have a choice.

Let me know if any of this helps you.

I've not done this in a 5.5 to 2003 environment, but have done it in a 2000 to 2003 environment and had some problems. I know you've already indicated that the permissions shouldn't be an issue, but double-check everything, because those error messages definitely point to a permissions problem on the Exchange 5.5 side. Other than that, I recommend trying 2 things, if you haven't already:

1. Try doing a single mailbox at a time, rather than selecting a bunch of mailboxes together, and see if it works that way.

2. Try doing the move as a 2-step process - first export to a PST and then import to the new mailbox, and see if that works better.

Hope this helps!
