Moving from Word 97 to Word XP

By JRD401 ·
I have two computers, one running Office 97 under Windows 95 (yes, 95!) and a new one running Office XP under Windows XP. I want to transfer NORMAL.DOT and CUSTOM.DIC, as well as all my .DOC files from the Win95 to the WinXP machines. What's the best way to do that. Are Word 97 documents compatible with Word XP? Can I just use a floppy to move the NORMAL.DOT and CUSTOM.DIC files over? Any advice would be appreciated.

XP does not create a Normal.dot until you make some changes. Open XP, Change the Default Font. Close XP. Now locate and rename Normal.dot. Bring in your Normal.dot from W97 and see what happens. The .DIC files should work, they're just text files.

Office XP should open your Office 97 .DOC files just fine.

The only exception would be if there were any linked files (spreadsheets, images) that you did not copy over.

Now, files saved in Office XP will not open in Office 97 unless you specifically save them as Office 97 versions.

I agree with DKlippert, it is inadvisable to attempt to move preference files from one version of software to another.

Too many variables change, and you are apt to cause program lockups or worse.
