moving Outlk Expr msgs from an old PC

By jwpluto ·
Although I'm comforatble with this in Outlook, I can't seem to find accurate information on moving OE 4 messages to my new Dell PC with OE 6. Do I have to do an export of all messages on the old PC and import to the new, or is there an easier / better way? I need the messages, but I've already removed the old PC hard drive.

not sure if this is the answer you want. can you just move over the store folder from the old machine. that is found by Tools/Options/Maintenance/Store Folder. then do an import on the new machine. i believe that will work. you might find an export/import easier. since you have taken out the old drive, would you be comfortable adding it into the new system as a second hard drive. with the dells, you might need to take off your cd-rom drive temporarily and use that cable. change the jumper settings on the old drive to cable select (probably no jumpers). good luck. keep asking if you need more help...

thank you for your input. All I needed to do was copy the mail folder files from the old drive to the new drive. The export/import would not work at all. Kept saying no files found during the import.

Now, the address book did need an export/import, which converted it to a CSV file. Import was real easy.

I've already put the old drive in the new PC. Works fine - that's how I got all the "My Documents" content moved. So if I understand you correctly, the path you mention tells me what folder the email inbox and folders are stored. I can simply move them to the equivalent place on the new PC. Correct?

well, i would say yes but hesitate because of version differences. but wouldn't hurt to try it. if it doesn't work, you can have a swing at import...good luck...

Outlook Express stores the messages in .dbx compressed files.

You can use Windows Explorer to search the old drive for *.dbx
There will be 1 file for each OE folder that you had, plus 1 additional file that holds the folder list.

Once you know the folder that the files are in, you can then use the import tool in OE to import your old messages into the new version of OE.

I assume that your old drive shows up as drive . If not, substitute the correct letter in the following.

For OE4, I think the mail files are stored at:
\Program Files\Outlook Express\User
Or, \Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\{string}
or somthing to that effect.

I'm on an XP box, and my W98 PC has OE 6 on it.
I believe that the last big change in folder location started with IE version 5.

As to your address book, that is more difficult to import from the old drive.
Try searching the drive for a .wab file.

I've tried the import feature i EO6 telling it to import OE4 messages and pointing to the folder where the .dbx files are. It won't import. I get the following error:

"No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running thathas the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open.

That makes no sense to me....
