Not so old.

That's just early middle age for a Vulcan. He was able to play a major role in one story line of TNG precisely because as a hundred-some-odd-year-old Vulcan he was the only member of the original crew who was still young enough to be active in his career and as an older version of himself the actor was perfect for it. (Scotty had been caught in a transporter loop for decades and so hadn't been keeping up, and McCoy was alive but ancient.)

I lived in Hollywood at the time. When he started work on Star Trek, Nimoy was so convinced that the project would be a failure that he didn't even bother to get an unlisted phone number. He was perfectly cast.

when Star Trek was a new show I was fascinated by it.I didn't, though, follow along once the series ended, in fact, for the most part, I didn't watch television much at all and finally not at all until 1992 when I was nursing my mother. (I'm 59) But if I had a hero it was Spock. The character fascinated me.
Running a search on Lenard Nimoy caused me to feel like Rip Van Winkle! Now I will have to read his first autobiography "I Am Not Spock" (1977 and his second one "I Am Spock" (1995)
The advantage to being Rip is that I have 30-40 years worth of stuff I can pick and choose from to entertain myself now that I have the time!
Thanks for letting me know about that episode of TNG. I'll have to see if it's at a video store.
