MS Access on Linux

By sordito ·
A friend of mine would like to use Linux servers in his business. His problem is that he needs to be able to store Access databases on Linux servers yet have multiple users access the database at the same time. Access on a Windows machine allows this, but we have not been able to do this when the database is on a Linux machine. (We're using RedHat 6.0) Only one user can open the database at a time. Is there a solution to this?

MS Access on Linux

There are two ways that you should be able to do it. I assume you're using samba services to connect to your linux computer, however essentially when you connect, you connect as a specific user. Therefore that user is in a specific group, which inRedhat is unique for each user (Usually their name). for instance the user "george" is set up in the group "george". What you can do is create a group called "database" and assign all users that need access to the database to the group "database". Be sure you set the permissions on the database file(s) to rw for owner, and r for the group and w if you want write ability.

The other option is to allow full access to the database file by all users making it rw for user, group and other.

Use the command "groupadd database" to create the group database. Then edit the /etc/password file and find the group database entry adding the user names to the entry in the following format.
database:502:root,name1,name2,name3
You can test to be sure it worked by entering the command "id name1".

To modify the file permissions use the chmod command. Read the man page or refer to the Linux users guide at: http:/ctdp.homestead.com/files/os/linux/usersguide/index.html.
Section 6 has examples on the use of chmod, and section 25 talks about managing users.

Different users are able to access the database, the permissions are OK. The problem is that only one person can access it at a time. The person must close the database before another can open it.
