MS Office 2000 vs. Corel WP Office 2000

By bkatz ·
I have a client with 50 users who are
migrating from a Novell 4.x server and
Windows 3.x workstations to a Windows
2000 server and workstation network.
Current office suite is Perfect Office.

The workers need to: share word
processing (in English, Russian and
Chinese) and some data (currently in
Lotus 1-2-3) internally and with outside
agencies, government and private.

We settled on a standard of MS Office
2000. BUT...some senior management
wants to consider WordPerfect Office
2000.

I STRONGLY recommend a single
standard and have been asked to do a
presentation on the implications of
maintaing both suites so workers can
choose. I need facts.

I manage ~60 users, in an office running a NW 4.2 file and print server, and NT DHCP and Domino servers. We use MS Office 2000, and Corel WP Suite 2000. It is not that big of a deal to run both concurrently, but you MUST get and apply all service packs to WP before it will run reliably. Otherwise you will chase fires all day long.
According to our editors, MS does not have the granular control over formatting that WP does. They seem to much prefer WP. Once you have the SPs installe, both are equally stable and trouble free.
I have worked with this group for years, and wanted to standardize on one suite, but hace not been able to get them to. However, there is something to be said for having a choice, and it is not much more work for me.
Thanks,

It may be hard to give facts on this issue only opinion. We are currently running WP Suite 8 and MS Office suite, the big issues you need to deal with is the back and forth of converting the files if there alot of people sharing files. Unless you are in a unique situation where you have more individual groups sharing files then corporate wide. We support both in our office and are currently deploying MS Office 2000 Suite because of the strong compatibility with MS Exchange and other MS products, we will continue to support the WP Suite 8 only because there are some very distiquishable differences and features that we use in WP 8 that are not found in MS Office. Hope that at least gives you some food for thought and information on what others are doing.

Don't under estimate how strongly people feel about their software. We changed to a company wide format about 3 years ago and you would have thought that we were suggesting a religion change. We went with Microsoft Office format since we have to interface with many of our clients and it is the most popular format. I have done some consulting and for some professions the WordPerfect Suite works better. An example would be the Legal profession, WordPerfect is better suited to their needs.

Good Luck!
