Ms Office XP/2003

By janclark2001 ·
When you click the Look in box in a Microsoft Office XP or in a Microsoft Office 2003 program dialog box (for example, when you click Open on the File menu to open a file), the Look in box may take a long time to show all the available resources.

Are the service packs for both XP and Office installed?

In addition, how much physical and virtual memory does your system have?

Are you searching locally or across a network?

A follow up to the memory resources would be 'How often do you reboot your system?'

Yes, Yes, XP is stable and doesn't need it. Hah!

I have encountered this numerous times and its related to your network settings in XP.

Here is a good site referring to this issue in Windows..

This should take care of the issue you describe.

The reason this does this is to end or terminate sessions that are active on the tcp/ip stack .. INcreased performance for windows. Unfortunatly this causes a major pause when accessing network nodes/shares after the time out.. So it has to go out and again verify the account, the network, the security etc..

Good Luck

Check to see if you have any unavailable network drives mapped. Sometimes Windows labours trying to find resources which are not connected.
