MS Project Server 2002 Install

By itsawondertoo ·
Client is requesting installation of MS Project Server 2002 for approx. 45 users. 8 uses will use Project Professional and the rest will access Project Server via Web Access CAL's. The installation will involve two servers. One server will have Project Server and IIS and the other server will be SQL Server. Any caveats or or concerns regarding the installation or support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

To use Microsoft Project Server for your organization's team collaboration, the following conditions must be met:
? Microsoft Project must be installed on the project manager's computer.
? Microsoft Project Server must be installed on a server computer with Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 or later and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or later already installed. Then team members can connect to project information on an intranet or the World Wide Web.
For example, if your organization maintains a Web server, an administrator can install Microsoft Project Server and provide you with the Uniform Resource Locator (URL).
Note To have complete access to Microsoft Project Server, its URL should be made into a trusted site in Internet Explorer.
Instructions for installing Microsoft Project Server can be found in the Help file Pjsvr10.chm on the Microsoft Project Server CD-ROM.
? Microsoft Project Web Access is licensed separately. For details about licensing for Microsoft Project Web Access, see the Microsoft end-user license agreement for the product.
? A browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (5.5 recommended) or later is needed to display project information on the Web site.
? One of the following Microsoft Windows systems must be installed: Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Professional.
? Everyone who needs to access project information on Microsoft Project Server should have network access and a network identification. For example, to identify and communicate with participating computers on an intranet, every computer should have a unique network identification. A system administrator can provide you with this information.
? If e-mail notification is used, anyone who wants to receive such messages must have an e-mail program installed.

When you install the project central server it creates the connection to the database. Since your ms sql server resides on a different server you might need to edit the odbc connection in the odbc settings. By default it is created as projectCentralDb

As in any new application implementation, planning is everything. Project Server's value is not in the daily project management functionality, but in the configurable features and functions. It is very important to understand how your client wantsto use the product, his full requirements - short and long term - and then use those as a guide for implemnatation and configuration. Running 'Setup' is not an option. There is a very extensive library of information on the MS Project Server site. Check out the following link to info on their Project Server Enterprise Implementation Framework:
"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;325956&" or search for EIF on the MS site.
Download the EIF resources. It's a good placeto start and has excellent material to cover with your client. A little planning and they will be much happier when you get through.
