MS word application issue

By rmodd99 ·
We have users that use network templates for MS word. After they fill in the template they will save it on the network under a new name as a .doc file. But when they email the changed .doc using MS outlook to other users, and the other users open itfrom outlook and then close it after they see it, MS word keeps popping up a window and asks if they want to replace this normal.dot with the one that already exists. All this by just closing the template they received in Outlook. Of course they sayno. and the window closes. Why is this template being seen a the normal.dot template. How can I fix this from happening.

They should be opening the template using File>New.
This will allow the completed form to be saved as a document. They are probably just saving the temlate with a new name.

It doesn't happen all the time. Only when they receive the file from someone else in and outlook email and and they open it from outlook and just try to x out with no saving involved. This is when they get the do you want to replace the normal.dot file.

Go to a workstation that is having this problem. Then, do a file search on that computer for Normal.dot

Observe the folder that Normal.dot is in, and then browse to that folder. Once you are in that folder, see if there are any .dot files with a tilde ~ character in front of them. If you find any, DELETE THEM. Then, DELETE the Normal.dot file. Word will automatically re-create this template the next time it's launched.

I cannot be 100% sure that this will fix your problem, but I've seen it fix similar problems.

If all else fails, try reinstalling office. Good luck!
