MS Word merged doc page numbering

By mominmillbrook ·
I am producing a cookbook, and used Access to hold the recipes and merged them into a 'directory' in Word. I have continuous section breaks throughout to allow the ingredients list for each recipe to flow in two columns and then the directions to go back to one column. I have the page set-up to be bookfold. Everything works fine on the merge and prints exactly as it should. The problem is I can't get page numbers to appear. When I insert page numbers in the footer, it only shows page 1,2,&3 even though the status bar shows that there are 42 pages. I would also like to create a TOC for this as well, but it only shows pages 1,2&3. How can I get page numbers to work? Do I have too many section breaks? or is it something to do with the bookfold setting? or both?
I would love some sort of answer to this, because my last resort is physically typing page numbers on my master hard copy prior to printing - ick!

I will bet that the footer information is not carrying across sections. I have had that happen in complex document structure before. My favorite solution is to go to- in this case, page 4 and insert your footer. See how far that takes you. It may finsh the document or may get stopped again. I'll bet your TOC is the same or a similar issue. I hav esometimes fooled Word into "seeing" the rest of the doc by alt clicking in the TOC and selecting "Update Fields". Give it a shot- couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the input, unfortunately it didn't work. I went into page 4 and inserted my page number and it came up as page 2, as did the next several pages. I created a TOC and all the pages were either page 1 or 2, and Alt-clicking did nothing, I'm not familiar with what was supposed to happen, but at any rate, if you have any other suggestions, I'm still stuck! I'd even be willing to send you my file to "play" with if someone is willing to try.

After balancing your columns with a continuous section break, add a hard page preak CTRL+ENTER

Unfortunately, adding a hard page break does just that, and I need multiple recipes on each page. When I am in the header/footer, the numbers are all over the map. I'm wondering if there is some way of resetting or overriding where-ever it is that Word gets the footer section numbers from.
What I've done in the absence of a solution is put a text box on each page, formatting the paragraph with numbering, and then centering the box on each page. Of course this does not allow me to create a TOC but I've manually typed one up.
I'll leave this open for one more kick at the can and see what happens!

Go to insert, page numbers, format and Set page numbering to {Continuous from previous section} at the start of each section break in your document.

If it does not work then let me have the doc for analysis

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, unfortunately they didn't solve my dilema. I have left my text boxes with as I described in the above comment, and I'll have to go with that, as I'm going to print in the next day or so. To DKlippert, if you do get it solved, I'd still love to know what happened, just so I can avoid or solve it in the future!
