MS Word selection behavior

In Microsoft Word 2003 SP2, the selection of text including (I think primarily) field objects causes the menu to be activated. This is, of course, quite maddening–one has to escape out of the menu to do the next thing. The Microsoft knowledgebase is no help. I’ve seen posts around the ‘net indicating I am not alone, but no solutions.
