MS Word – Slow startup/exit

I have a client with MS Word 2000 (of Office 2000). When she starts Word or exits Word, it is very, very slow (sometimes producing an error that I have not documented yet). I was wondering if it is due to the program writing to a template or other file that may be corrupt. I search for the normal.dot and could not find it.
