MS Word Vertical Text

When I highlight a column of vertical text in Word (position cursor at beginning of text I want, Hold ALT, mouse over text I want)then right click on the selected text to choose COPY, it unselects everything except the first line of text.
I had this problem before (8years? ago) and the fix was a setting in another program, but alas I’ve forgotten what that setting was. This is the first time since (and a dozen different PC’s) that it’s happened.
Ctrl+C still works as it’s supposed to.
HELP!?!
