MSCONFIG for Windows 2000?

By mscoulter ·
Hello,
Is there a utility like the msconfig from win98 for Windows 2000? I would like to stop some processes from starting with Windows. Thanks!

In Win 2K to stop processes from starting login as Administrator and go to

Start Button
Settings
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Services

Find the service you want to stop and right click on it.

Select Properties from the menu.

Use the Startup Type pull down box to select manual. This will cause that service to not start automatically the next time you boot.

Use the Stop button to stop the process right away.

Nice try, but as Jimmm33 says, "not all programs run as services". I was looking for a way to control the precesses as viewed in the task manager. Thank you very much for trying to help.

Not all programs run as services so you will need to edit the registry. Start, run type Regedit. The path is H_KEY LOCAL MACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, CURRENT VERSION, then look in RUN, RUN ONCE, and SERVICES. Just delete the entrys you dont want.

A better solution is Mike Lin's Start UP Control Panel. This is a great proreams that will make it as easy as msconfig, and it's free. Find it here:

Good Luck

Congrats, you win the points! I asked for a utility that would do the trick and YOU delivered! StartupCPL works great. Thanks very much!

Try TweakUI. One place to get it is:

(There are no spaces in the URL)
Despite the mention of W98, this works with 9x/2000/NT

Thanks, but I already have tweakUI for w9x/2k and it does not assist in controlling the processes that start with windows.
