Microsoft included a Lite version of Veritas WinINSTALL on the Windows 2000 CD. You can find it in the \Valueadd\3rdparty\Mgmt\Winstle folder. install it on a server or some computer other than the one you want to create a msi for. Browse to the Veritas software folder on the server you just installed Wininstall on, from the machine you want to create the package for (M$ says it needs to be a clean system - no other apps etc installed so that there are no dependency issues). Run discoz.exe and take a snapshot of the clean system. Install your application, tweak it out the way you like it, reboot if neccesary. Now rerun the discoz.exe it creates basicly a difference file that you can lay down on a different computer with all the configuration settings intact. I have created many msi packages for computers using the exact same H/W and OS platform and they work Great (well, almost all of them did) I dont know about different hw/os. If some one else has created msi packages on one set of hw/os and used them on another, I would be interested in your results.

WinInstall LE does, but solely makes a 'repackaged snapshot'. The real stuff is done through the Windows Installer Development Kit.
This is for free download at the MS website.
However mind you - it has a steep learning curve. Alternatives are thecommercial tools for making the MSI's:
- WISE for Windows Installer
- Installshield (Windows Installer Edition)

These shield part of the complexities of the MSI format from the developers, cost around 600-800 bucks for a license however!

Hope thiz helpz,
