MSN Messenger error 80090305

By steve.doig ·
When signing into msnmsgr, I receive the following error:

"Signing in to MSN Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. 80090305."

This has only happened with version 7. I was using version 6.* and a message appeared saying I must upgrade to continue using Messenger.

After the upgrade was complete, I could use it fine. The problem has only occured in the last 3 weeks or so. In that time, Zone Alarm firewall has been upgraded to the latest version: 6.0.667.000. I have removed and readded Messenger as a trusted app but the issue remains. If I shut down Zone Alarm and the issue remains. I repair Messenger and the issue remains. If I uninstall and reinstall versioion 6.3 it says I must upgrade - I chose to do so once more in case a flaw had been fixed but the same thing happens.

I have searched for this error and found the following advice:
http://www.msusenet.com/archive/topic.php/t-1871065613.html
I have tried this and nothing changes.

Any fixes for this one could be sent to Microsoft, because they do not have any listing for this error.

Best regards,

Steve Doig

Hi Paul,

I'm connected on broadband, with no proxy server.

Cheers,

Steve

I now notice my IE6 has cypher strength of 0-bit.

I think this is the problem, as I reckon Messenger signs in over a secure connection.

The MS Support website says to download and install the Win2K High Encryption pack. I have done this and rebooted, but the cypher strength remains at 0-bit.

I have tried another repair of IE, but it makes no difference.

So, the question becomes, how can I get 128-bit cypher strength back in IE6 if installing the Win2K high-encryption pack does not work?
