Asia Development Bank Institute Workshop on mLearning

by brauerd In reply to Musings on mLearning

I just returned from the Asia Development Bank Institute (ADBi)
"International Workshop on Mobile Learning for Expanding Educational
Opportunitites" 16-20 May 2005 in Tokyo, Japan. The focus of the
workshop was on helping emerging countries understand and apply
mLearning to increase access for their underserved populations.
The basic idea is that using mLearning, countries can "leapfrog" the
expense of investing in fiber optics and copper as well as
fixed-in-place computer labs and provide direct learning to students on
wireless mobile devices. My company, PREL, demonstrated a Reading
and ESL for young learners application delivered to Pocket PCs using
Flash. The application was ported from our Web-based delivery and
all of the high quality animation and graphics held up very well in the
process.
What do you think? Is mLearning a possible means of getting
"anytime, anywhere" learning to the underserved, or is it just the
latest technology buzzword du-jour?
