My co-worker makes 20K more than me!

Last payday our checks were mixed up he had mine and I had his. I opened it up without looking at the name as I usually do and then I thought I got a huge raise or something only to find out that he had my check and had opened it as well. We do almost the exact same thing we are system administrators. the only difference is that he is the email administrator and I am the database administrator (we wear many hats). Other than that we take care of everything together. He thinks I should hit them up for a raise to at least match his salary. I feel the same way. How should I approach this? Is asking for a 20K increase a little extreme? Any advice on this situation will be greatly appreciated.

Have all the back-up information that you can before you approach your supervisor.

Are there any differences in your resumes?

Are you going to get either of you in trouble for finding out what each other makes?
Some companies are very strick about this. So, check the rules closely.

How does your present pay compare to other companies in the area?

Don't forget to honestly compare your performance to the co-workers.

Asking for 20K raise is A LOT extreme. That's pretty close to 2K / month (before taxes of course).

How's the business doing in today's current economic stress? How long have you been with the company? Were you dissatisfied with your salary before you found out what your peer makes? What do you accomplish for the company that you can point to and say, I saved the company $x dollars by doing this?

If I were you, I'd recommend listing out all the tasks you accomplish each day, researching into area salaries for the work you do, and documenting and supporting a request for a raise based on just your efforts. You cannot base the request for a raise on someone else's salary. That's not relevant to you.

What is relevant is what you add to the company; whether they can get anyone else to do the same or better for less salary.

Unless you are already have an upper six-figure income, yes, asking for a 20K raise is definitely extreme and will probably cause you to be laughed at and shown the door.

One would think that if 2 people do essentially the same jobs, that the salary should be essentially the same. I find this to almost never be the case. There are many other variables.

Some of these variables are:
seniority (length of employment) in the company

education level (some companies will pay more for a college degree)

economic and unemployment conditions at the time each employee was hired (your co-worker may have been hired at a time when it was very difficult to find a qualified, skilled email administrator, thus causing the company to offer moremoney to lure him in; likewise, you may have been hired at a time when there was a glut of database administrators available, thus allowing the company to offer much less money to fill the position

Other possible problems to surmount:

Even assuming that you can convince management that your true worth to the company is essentially equal to that of your co-worker, many companies have policies stating the maximum raise an employee can be given in any one year.

As stated in other answers, economic conditions may be such that your employer can't afford a large raise even if he wanted to give you one.

Here is how I would approach this:
1. Make sure that ALL your evaluations say essentially that you "walk on water" (i.e. you are one of the best of the best and the company couldn't function with out you).
2. Talk with your immediate supervisor. Explain how you found out about the disparity in salary. See if he agrees that the situation is unfair. Without his agreement, you probably have NO chance of convincing upper management.

3. See if your supervisor will broach the subject with upper management. Every employee thinks he should be making more than he is. If a supervisor mentions what he perceives to be an injustice, management is much more likely to listen.
4. If all of the above steps work out positively, be open to alternatives to such a large raise. Consider other forms of compensation such as a maximum allowable raise over several years, eventually bringing you to parity with your co-worker; or increased benefits such as more days off, or higher bonuses, or training opportunities paid for by the company.

The LAST thing you want to do is make this confrontational. If you do, you will surely lose and maybe find yourself without a salary at all.
