My laptop shuts down for no reason – why

by digitaldivide . Updated 23 years, 8 months ago

Hi I have a laptop which I bought last december and have had numerous problems with over the year. Its an Advent 6416 with Microsoft ME on it. I have already had to reinstall the OS twice this year, last time in July.
However two days ago the thing just froze and I had to shut it down manually. Now it just doesnt start up properly at all – it will either go as far as showing the ME logo when I turn it on but then just switches itself off unexpectedly, or it goes into ‘safe mode’. I have done ‘system restore’ a couple of times and it still doesnt work, or it will work for a few minutes before completely shutting down again.

Can anyone please help me as to why its doing this and what I can do about it? Its impossible to use and I’m afraid I’m going to lose all my files as I am not able to back them up if the computer doesnt start. Its due to be taken away on Monday but I just think that they will just reinstall the os again and I’ll lose everything. Is there anything I can do myself to sort it out. I’m not a ‘techie’ by the way.
