mystery dvd drive that doesnt exist

By racintazz ·
my computer has created its own DVD drive. it is listed as "generic dvd-rom scsi CdRom device". it is listed as Drive " I ", there is no drive " I ". i have two drives, on cdrw, one dvdrw, but i have 3 listed. i cant remove this non existent drive as it simply returns, no software I am aware of has installed a drive ( ala gamedrive ), and even if it had, the drive is non-functional, simply there, and is occasionally queeried by the computer. suggestions ?

check your running processes, stop any that you do recognize it is not yours, go to services(.msc) and look for any service that has been installed with new drive...stop and disable it.
Go back to my computer and right click the drive go to drivers and uninstall drivers go start settings ctrl panel add remove hardware and remove drive all together... scan for virii and spoyware (at least 2 times using different tools like pest patrol=spy, bitdefender.com=anti virus, microsoftantispyware=spy, mcafee=anti virus). if it does not work...I would wonder.:)
Good luck

Did you try to remove it from Device Manager? If not, right-click My Computer--select Properties--Hardware tab--click Device Manager button--expand your CD/DVD drives--right-click the offending drive--click "uninstall"--click OK

racin... probably you have installed a game that uses a "ghost" drive . You cannot get rid of it until you deinstall the game or the dummy dvd software . Of course if you deinstall it you cannot play the game .

I had the same thing when I installed Clone CD/DVD it creates a drive that you are able to load a cd/dvd image into and play the image as if it was on disc. there was an option in clone to disable the drive.

Nero also installs a virtual drive, do as suggested & check device manager.
