Need a product key for a win2k pro cd

A friend purchased a copy of Windows 2000 pro, and was not given a product key. We have been to the serial site, but none of the product keys worked. Can I hack the disk to get the product key? if not where can I get the product key from?
I would prefer a legal way to do this, but I am open to any suggestions!!!
