General discussion

I have been perfoming tech work for about 3 years and have a good understanding of pc systems. I would like to start getting certified but am unsure of how and where. I live in a small town. How do I find a testing center and what book or study method would you suggest.

remove any spaces provided by tech r.

This is the basic website starting from scratch where you can see what cert's are available and after signing up, can find a testing center closest to your area.

Good Luck.

In what OS are you primarily working in? You should start there, IMHO. Get certified in what you know first, then start to look at what you WANT to know (and get certified in that also!).

For example, a good Microsoft cert site I like is for Microsoft stuff (obviously).

First of all, *you* need to decide which study method works be for you. Some people do really well reading books but the majority of the worlds population respond better to something more interactive. If you are going to invest in this sort of study, go for the one that works for you.

Places to look for information about certification:
Also manufactor's websites for the equipment and software you use.

Deciding what to do:
Do you want to be tied into one manufacturer (like Cisco or Micrsoft)? If so, do you want mass market skills or specialist ones?
Or do you want manufacturer independent (like Comptia or one of the other professional groups)?
Or do you want to prove your professional standing rather than a smaller skillset? In which case look at professional bodies (ACM, IEEE, etc.)
Or are you really wanting to do a part time course to raise your education level in the topics surounding computing?
What you choose will depend on where you are now and what you want to be. Think hard about it and you won't waste time and money. Good luck.

Where the testing centers are depends on the tests you want to take. Some tests can be adminstered through local colleges others are automated and companies like Prometric will have a number of training companies in a region who can administer the tests. You may need to travel but not too far.
