Negative numbers in Excel 2003 - how to display these in brackets

There is no option for brackets in the format numbers screen (even if the number in the cell is negative)

Try this

In 'Format Cells' choose custom, type in:

#,##0_);{#,##0}

or if you want it red:

#,##0_)Red]{#,##0}

If that's the wrong bracket:

#,##0_)Red][#,##0]

that should give you the idea.

Many thanks. Is there a way I could have worked this out/should have been able to work this out for myself?

What I did

was to go into the "Format Cells" dialog, choose "Custom" and experiment. In particular I would click on an option and look at how it formatted the number. After a while I observed that you could change the parentheses and color for negative numbers.
