Net work Printer Errors

By Zharia ·
I have a workstation that I need to connect to a network laser printer. When I try to install the printer I get spool32 errors. I get this when I try to install using the recommended driver. (Computer was previously installed to another laser printer). When I install using a new driver it gives me rundll32 errors and tells me the driver HPPTA.DRV is in use by another program. When I try to delete the driver to reinstall, it tells me I cant because it is in use by Windows. I cannot go to properties of the printer because thats when I get the rundll32 error.
Could anyone help with his. I apologise for giving only 50 points, I havent had enough time to build more points. Many thanks.

You left out a very important piece of information. What OS is on the workstation. Windows 95 is plagued with Spool32 errors and rundll errors. If it is windows 95 go to Microsoft's website and look for the Spool fix patch.

Also check to see that there isn't any of HP's print software and port monitoring software installed. If there is remove it and try to delete the printer again.

A good workarond especially if the laserprinter is an HP laserprinter. Do not install the drivers that are specific for the printer. All HP printers can print using the standard HP laserjet III or Laserjet 4 drivers. Try installing the printer using those drivers that are already included in windows. Like I said it is a work around.

Make sure this part is setup OK .

Press Delete ( del ) on boot up , now this part can vary depending on your version .
Go to Intergrated Peripherals & then Onboard Parallel Mode , using the arrow key .
Make a note of the existing entry .
Use the Page Down button to try the next entry .
Press Esc .
Save & Exit , Y , press Enter .
If it is still not right , repeat above , again & again .
If you find a entry that works , make sure you make a note of it .
Eventually you get back to where you started . John .

Try This first - it might work and its' easy. go into Control Panel/ Add/remove Programs - remove anything that looks like a printer (watch out if you have an HP scanner). Go to your printers folder and remove all printers. Go to device manager and make sure your LPT1 port is plain old vanilla LPT port (not ECP) -reboot - CTRL/ALT/DEL - check for anything HP (unless you have an HP scanner) track it down and uninstall anything HP -reboot - reload only!! the printer driver you want using HP's installer if applicable
