Network Administrator Career

By CuddlesHugsKisses. ·
I am currently a Helpdesk Specialist. I have taken Networking+ and an Intro to Cisco class. I want to become a Network Administrator or Junior Network Administrator. How do I break into that field when everywhere I go everyone want hands-on experience Network Admins not book knowledge. I am willing to do internship but cannot find any.

Networking+ and Introductory Cisco is fine, for a start. Do you know how to "administrate" Win2000 or WinNT? Or some kind of unix?

Usually a good place to make contacts is where you are going to school for these classes. Most of the trade schools out there offer some kind of placement service. Most of them also have internships. Keep in contact with the people who have taught the classes and ask their advise. Keep learning. You are in the field as a Help Desk Specialist... so talk to people outside where you work and don't give up.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat you are. I've been working on a helpdesk now for a year, supporting VPN, and I'm also looking for Admin position. I have about 3 years IT experience and 2 years 'home networking' experience, which doesn't say much, but it's great way to get your foot in the door.

If you can afford it, i recommend you setup a small network at home, 2 or 3 computers will do and 'manage' it. Do everything you can think of that real admins do at work. Certificate also helps. Itmight take you a while, but don't give up. I live in Toronto, and I've been looking for a better position for a long time now. Bottom line is experience and contacts. I hope I won't be stuck here for another year.
