Network controller driver for Dimension 8300

By ebayva ·
I am finishing a fresh install of Win XP pro on a Dell Dimension 8300 for my boss' personal use. He started the install and couldn't find the correct driver for the ethernet controller. I figured this would be no trouble at all since I recently built one of these machines for myself and am happily using it at home with no problems. When I went to install the recommended Broadcom driver from Dell's site, I got a message stating that this driver did not contain info about my hardware. So, I installed the Intel 10/100 driver, which is the only other listed driver for this machine on Dell's website. Same message. Any suggestions?

Device Manager

by scott_heath In reply to Network controller driver ...

Go to Device Mgr and go to the properties of the unknown device, click the details tab and then make sure Hardware IDs is selected. You should see something like:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_03D0&SUBSYS_020E1028&REV_A2

Go to http://www.pcidatabase.com and use the Vendor ID (The 4 characters after VEN_) and the Device ID (The 4 characters after DEV_) to find the make and model of your NIC.

Happy Hunting,
Scott

Thank you!

I have added the site to my favorites, thanks a bunch! With this machine, I ended up disabling the device and installing a network card. It was a quick fix since the boss needed the system right away. But I am very glad to have the resource!
