Network Drop Outs

By shaun ·
We have a windows 98 machine on the network which keeps dropping its connection on the network. We have tried reinstalling, adding new network card, fixing IP address etc. The Server is NT4 running DHCP with two IP ranges and two WINS servers. When it drops its connection it can see another machine and recieve mail from the server however it cannont access the MS Access database on the same server.

Have you tried running a line tester of some sort on the line? Sometimes when a line is ran, some of the wires inside the cable can either become binded or severed. Try putting that connection on a different port on the hub/switch or try putting the machine on another jack. Maybe you can use the user's neighbor's jack?

Good Luck

make sure you don't have an IRQ conflict such as with a printer. Also be sure you don't have a device on the network with the same IP address as the win 98 machine. Sometimes dhcp is configured wrong and assigns an ip which is statically assigned to a device such as a printer.
