is there a way to set up a 98 machine so that it gets authenticated by the server on the network, be able to access shared resources on the network but be invisible in the network neighborhood ?

Do not enable file and print sharing. You will still be authenticated by the server and get to resources. If this is the case, I can not remember seeing an entry for hidden in the 98 registry like in NT. You may try adding a $ to the end of you computer name.

Some suggestions, hope this helps.
