Networking W2K Systems

By pljoy ·
I am attempting to set up a network with two machines running W2K and one running W98SE. They are setup in a workgroup through a D-Link router. The router is acting as the DHCP. The router can see all of the systems but I can't get the computers to see each other. I've checked all the IP settings and they are all correct on each machine. They do not see themselves when I pull up the network places either. So I am guessing that something is enabled in W2K that is preventing them from seeing each other. Only I'm not familiar enough with W2k to know what it is.

Thanks.

Sounds like a WINS issue, since that's what enables you to see other machines in Network Places.

On the W2K machines, make sure your WINS configuration is set to Enable WINS over TCP/IP if your DHCP server doesn't support NetBIOS setting.

I assume that the obvious stuff has been checked, i.e., Client for Microsoft Windows has been installed?

I have a couple of quesions ?
are they (all 3 ) in the same workgroup (make sure the name of the workgroup is 8 letters or less )?
is the iprange a private range network (192.168x.x , 169.x.x.x , 10.x.x.x)
Install the netbeui protocol on all machines.
in case they have a software firewall, disable that to check if that makes a difference.

If you follow all of the above there is no reason that they can not see each other in a same workgroup. !
