networking XP with 98, 95 and NT

By ceforest ·
I got a new compaq with XP installed and cant seem to connect to the network or the internet. I went through the network wizard and named the workgroup "office" like it is on our current network. When I tried to use the network setup disk that the wizard created on the NT workstation, it said it does not work with NT. I have the cable connected and activity light on the hub. What am I missing?

Thanks . . . Charles )

You must create the exact users from the 98, 95, and NT boxes on the XP box. You must also have the guest account enabled on the xp box. Run the network wizard on the xp box manually. If the network name is "OFFICE" then "office" will not work must be written all in caps. If you have any firewalls temporarily disable them to see if that is what is causing your problem. Make sure the 98, 95, and NT have file and print and client for microsoft networks as protocols(this one must be your primary network logon). You may also have enable netbios over tcp\ip.

XP should automatically recognise your network as soon as you plug the network cable in. Try to ping another address. If you aren't using TCP/IP on the other windows machines, you must have IPX/SPX/NETBIOS installed and identified with a unique address. To join the workgroup in XP, in control panel, system, Computer name, choose to manually name the PC and join the workgroup, or use the network wizard there. XP Home can only join workgroups, it cannot join domains - you need XP Pro for that.
