New Exchange Server

By mark ·
The setup is this

6 NT4 servers with Exchange 5.5
server 1 is the main server, sends and receives to the internet.
Server 2 & 3 connect via an ISDN modem
Server 4,5 & 6 are connected sites on the WAN.

I want to REPLACE Server 1 with a new Dual p3 system, what is the best way to get this new server into the Mail system. and take over all the roles of server 1 so that this old server can be retired ?

Bring up the new server and join the existing site, when it's up start moving users and services from old server to new, leave old server up for a couple of days to make sure everything is working, then shut it down but don't delete it from the siteuntil you confirm everything still works, I normally leave it it the site for a couple of days.

I agree with Gary's answer that you want to build the new server as a second server in the site and use the Exchange Administrator Move Mailbox utility to migrate the user mailboxes to the new server. That part works really well except that everyone has to log on at least once before you remove the original server from the site or their Outlook won't get updated and you'll have to do it manually.

Then, you'll want to consult article Q152959 on Technet for those little nuts and bolts things you need to do before you remove the other server from the site.

There is an alternative procedure called a "forklift" upgrade and it does the process all at once. In this, case, you physically move the database files to the new server and fire it up. Details are in article Q199954 on Technet.

Having done both, if there is a large number of users, I prefer the forklift procedure. For any number of users, Microsoft prefers the first option.

regards!
