New hockey rules...what do you think?

By MirrorMirror ·
I love hockey. I really hated that they did not have a season last year. But, I will be able to get my fix this year.

Since I am in Texas and am truthfully still learning hockey, I thought that more experienced people could provide opinions on the new rules.

I'm not too sure about limiting where the goalie can handle the puck. And, I'm gald they are doing something about ties with the shoot out.

What do you think about the new rules?

New rules

Just like all major sports and their respective
governing bodies, hockey will still be played.
I think the red line played a big part in the game as will its absence. Obstruction may allow for more wide open play, and some high scoring games as well.

New rules are crap

I like the part about "sending a written letter to the player". gee whiz. Taken all the fun out of the sport if you ask me. Not a decent sport left. sissies.

I like hockey for it's roughness and the sheer physicality of it. So-far, I have liked that hockey has been a truely tough sport, NOT FOR SISSIES. American football players would not last a second in the NHL. I actually like the fights. I used to play sports in high school and would have given my right arm to punch out someone sometimes. LOL! That letter thing did give me a giggle.

The fights are the only reason to watch it. Kind of like watching nascar for the wrecks.

If you wanna watch fake fights...

by M_a_r_k In reply to exactly

...just watch professional fake wrestling. It's on TV damn near every night all year round and usually on pay-per-view.

Speaking of NASCAR wrecks, whatever happened to the Demolition Derbies? Does anyone remember those? Wide World of Sports showed them every now and then. They were fun to watch.

ARE NOT FAKE! They are good wholesome entertainment.

At one of the three hockey games I have been to, a couple of actors in hockey uniforms (uh, I mean a couple of hockey players) got into a "fight". All the other players gathered around them in a circle and appeared to be chatting with one another while the two guys whaled away on each other's pads. After about a minute, one of the refs looked at his watch then sauntered over to the two blokes and broke up the entertainment. Game resumed a few seconds later.

Sure, some of the fights are real, but most are purely for entertaiment purposes. Adults simply do not engage in fisticuffs as often as hockey players supposedly do. I haven't gotten into a fight since I was a kid and I have played all sorts of competitive but amateur sports. Many times I have gotten pissed at an opposing player and felt like decking his ***. However, being a mature and responsible adult (cough!), I restrained. In the less restrictive world of amateur sports, I would think there would be more fights, not fewer, than in the highly governed image-conscious world of professional sports. Especially when you get a bunch of wanna-be athletes who sit around in an office all day and they get out on the softball field and try to be Babe Ruth. In the real world, you get thrown in jail for fighting.

At nearly all of the 50+ hockey games I've been to, I have seen real fights. Maybe you just can't tell the difference. I've even seen blood on the ice (anaheim vs capitals c.1996 @ USAir arena) I've been going to hockey games most of my life. I don't care what you think, I like to watch them beat the crap out of each other because it is interesting how they do it. Shirt ripping, shirt over head, the best is when they each grab the front of the other guys shirt and use the other hand to just beat away at their opponent's head until one of them loses grip and falls, at which point the refs come in. They let them fight because they know it is what a lot of the fans come for. I don't expect hockey players to be overly bright, nor do I expect them to know restraint.

I think you do care what I think. You value my opinion very highly. You know I'm the only sane person on TR who can be counted on to give an objective, fair and unbiased opinion: ^O
