New PC – cannot browse internet using dialup?

Hi newbie here so go easy on me

My mum has a brand newly built PC (about 2 weeks old), and has XP Professional installed along with Norton Antivirus 2003.

She has a 2.6mz AMD Sempron, 80gb hard drive with 512 RAM.

She is using 56k dial-up internet (tiscali) with an external modem, and although her default homepage (bbc) loads straight away after that browsing becomes progressively slower and slower until imposssible after about 3/4 pages have loaded. Some pages do not load up at all after a while and she is forced to turn off her connection and try again. She cannot access any secure sites at all (for her internet banking and buying things). She has cleared her cache to no avail.

I ran spyware and nothing came up, checked with her ISP and there are no reported problems, and have used a different browser (firefox) and get the same problems.

She’s using a 56k dialup ISP, but browsing was fine on her old Windows 98 400mz pc, and the secure sites loaded fine?

The same symptoms apply to a faulty dial-up modem. See it alot out here in the sticks; mostly caused by power surges. Even modems that respond sucessfully to diagnostics, are suspect.

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in “Technical Q&A,” not in “Discussions.”

      Please re-post there.

      Thank you.

I really appreciate the amount of time and effort that you put into your mission of correcting everybody. As far as I can see there aren’t enough self appointed forum police. You are really helping to clean the place up. Go get ’em tiger.
