New to the IT Market

I just recently graduated college with 2 A.A.S degrees in Network Technology and Information Systems Security. I also have my A , Security , and CCENT certifications. With zero years experience in the field yet armed with these certifications I was wondering what dollar value I could place on my skill set. I don't want to over-value nor under-value myself on the market.

Certs alone aren't enough

by IT_Stargazer In reply to New to the IT Market

Hi Paul, unfortunately everything you present for qualifications says "entry-level". Don't get me wrong, it's all good stuff, but without relevant experience to go along with these certs you are very much entry level. Depending on the marketplace where you are, you might be able to start out in the $40-50K range ($20-$25 / hr), possibly higher. A good starting place might be an IT help desk, where you can gain the experience to leverage your credentials into a better paying position that will also provide additional experience. Salary surveys showing $70-80-90K for CCENT or Sec are based on averages, and are pretty unrealistic, as the comments that accompany such postings always show. Good luck, you've picked what is still a very good career field with lots of potential, but the learning and other challenges always remain.
