New video card, no monitor signal….

by write2scott . Updated 18 years, 8 months ago

I have been upgrading my computer and have run into a problem. At the moment the computer stats are as follows:

Asus Maximus motherboard
4 Gigs of Corsair 6400 memory
Intel Q6600 Quad core processor
Raptor 75 Gb 10,000rpm hdd
one 300 gb hdd
two 500 gb hdd’s
620 watt Enermax Power supply
Sony DVD burner
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit

I had a Asus 7800 GTX video card but wanted to upgrade it to something that ran DirectX 10, and found the Radeon 2900 Pro 1 gb.

Everything was fine until I installed the Radeon card. The (extremely loud) fan on the card started, a red light on the card came on, but the monitor did nothing. I could hear all the usual beeps and sounds of the pc but the monitor was blank. I put the 7800 back in and everything was fine. Now the crazy thing that happened… was that when I bought the card the guy at the store said ‘wow, I’ve never seen a 1gb video card before’ and opened the box and picked up the card! This was before I bought it and at that point I should have run, but I didn’t.

Other than the possibility of the sales guy frying the card, is it possible the PSU is not powerful enough? Is there a good way to test for these or other possibilities? Is there anything else that would cause this problem?

Thanks!
