Nic Card

By kal_lmn ·
my XP internet just stopped all of a sudden. i checked, and there is no missing drivers, all are recognized. it sees the ip address, but still doesnt connect. lastly, i know the internet works because my ubnutu (linux) machine works perfectly. So recently i installed a nic card (and got drivers with linux machine). the card is recognized, but it always says "limited or no connectivity" and an error occured while assigning a network address. what is the fix to this (with or without nic card, i dont care) i just want my internet to work on my windows machine. thank you for all your help.

Corrupt WINSOCK2

by Churdoo In reply to Nic Card

Your winsock may have become corrupt. Check this article:

There are also free utilities on the net to repair a corrupt winsock, but I like the last method in the above article, section entitles "Windows XP without Service Pack 2 instructions".

Did you contact your ISP

by ComputerCookie In reply to Nic Card

Assuming that Ip address was obtained from the Modem/Router, you shoul have been able to access it to try and troubleshoot your problem.

Failing that you should have spoken to your ISP.

The notification "limited or no connectivity"
shows because you have asked the NIC to advise you of the same, most ISP's recommend that you un-tick this option as it does not indicate that you have no internet connection.

I would uninstall the NIC and try and connect again, if you are unable to do so the first stop would be your ISP and you probably have no idea how to log on to the device.

Churdoo is right?

by ComputerCookie In reply to Nic Card

But I'd still talk to your ISP, there are reasons why this might occur, e.g firewall.

I recently receive a free copy of CA Security Plus from my bank with 3 licences however although I can see other computers there is no Internet access from my computer, this is because of a corrupt Winsock or Gateway Protocol registers.

A restart normally fixes this, speak to your ISP.

No CD?

If you don't have a WinXP CD, how did you get XP on the machine?

no cd

by kal_lmn In reply to No CD?

i have no cd because i ordered this machine with winXP pre-installed. i have my cd key (on the case) but no cd wiht it. and i tried looking up a winsockfix program. one needed only a win 9x machine, and the other looked like it helped, but i still have the same problem (no internet) on both the integrated card, and the pci nic card. i also tried to ping a site, it had no effect.
