NIC Problem...help!

By awolf ·
We have a computer that we re-installed NT on. The new install will give us this
error when we try to install the driver for the nic, "Setup error---Network card
not present in system".

The card is 3COM 905B. The Connected/Activity lights onthe card are on/flashing.
It is the same card that was in the machine before the re-install. Tried a
different card...same result. Put the card in another machine, card worked. PnP
is disabled in setup.

We didnt have a problem until the re-install of NT.

Anybody have any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

Check your IRQ's first. Second- on 3Coms site they have a program to run first before installing on the 3C905x (It's in the drivers section). If that doesn't work try clearing the BIOS and re run your system config(and/or upgrade it if needed) of the system and check with whoever makes your system on how to do this- (If its a Compaq e-mail me and I can tell you how).
Last but not least, remove the IP protocol, then add it back (you may to put in a workgroup to do this) rerun your WINNT service pack and reinstall the drivers.
Hope this helps! SFO

Awolf,

The Microsoft NT4W/S CDs do not support the 3com 3C905b or 905c NICs. Only the original 3c905. To correct your install problem, download the current 905x drivers from the 3com site and copy them to a floppy.

Install NT without networking (if member server) or make an NT driver disk for the 905x (if PDC/BDC) and use the diskette drivers instead of the NT CD drivers.

Reboot and install networking from the CD/NIC drivers from the floppy and apply the latest NT service pack.

Good luck.

The install was clean. I elected to install the network components after the initial setup.

The error will show up after we... "add" new adapter...."have disk"...we insert floppy one for 3com NIC....select the driver..."ok"...then this where the error shows.

After the NT install, run a service pack. At least sp4.
Then install the latestest drivers.
