niche vendors

Niche Vendor is a vendor that sells to, or provides products that fit, a narrowly defined portion of a market or industry.

A simple example is a shoe store that sells men's, women's and children's shoes would not be a niche vendor

A shoe store that sells only Men's shoes that are size 13 and larger and that are double DD to 4x E width is a niche vendor - to men with very large very wide feet. Maybe not a big market but one which the vendor feels has sufficient potential to be viable and not properly addressed by other broader based vendors.

Niche vendors concentrate their offerings and expertise to specific areas - this term is also similar to saying a specialty vendor or limited offering vendor.

A niche vendor can be activein new techonology not yet generally accepted, in old techonolgy that has past its prime and has a limited market place (now referred to as legacy), or may wish to limit offering so as to provide excellent product/service for very specific needs.HTH

By definition, a market niche is a small portion of the market whose needs are different from the rest of the market. A niche vendor is someone whose product or service is geared specifically to those needs.

Almost by definition, a niche vendor has a small number of customers for their product. The product will probably be quite expensive at first glance, because the vendor has to recover their costs and make a profit from a smaller number of customers.

Microsoft and Netscape are NOT niche vendors. Their products are essentially commodities. MS Office is much more complex than most niche products, but costs much less. Niche products can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
