No IT experience... what to do?

By mbroadway ·
This is my first time here and my first post. I need direction. I have a PMP, but my experience has been primarily in marketing communication projects. I have no IT experience at all. I was laid off three weeks ago and I'm seeing all of the PM positions are in the IT arena. I'm considering taking an IS/IT Project Management course from Villanova. Would that give me a basic understanding of IT projects? I know how to manage a project, just don't know how PM methodologies transfer to the IT world. Any suggestions would be appreciated.? Thanks so much.

Since I haven't received any replies yet, I thought I would try to bump this back toward the top in the hope that someone will offer some advice. Thanks.

You're right that IT is a different kind of project management

Look for information around the IT Project + certification offered by CompTIA. As you are a PMP today, the exam will be somewhat easier for you than for a person with no PM experience.

The thing that you will have to get through is that most IT projects look for a track record with similar IT projects. I have done both software development and infrastructure but I am not common in the field. There tends to be more leeway in infrastructure because the project is based on tangibles while development is intangible.

Look for contract work over permanent at first. That lets you build up some experience. Or consider a Coordinator role as a first out.

The Villanova course would be a good one too. It will certainly help you to understand the difference between the project management experience you already have and the way it is applied in the IT environment.

Get in touch with your PMI and see if you can find a mentor as you make the shift. They may also be able to advise you on your best path.

Google "IT Project +" without the quotes. You should find a wealth of information there.

Good luck!

You might want to start at the bottom...

Find a no experience (or little experience) IT job. Normally non-profits and the like will hire someone who has a clue. You probably need the IT experience before you can manage the projects.

With that being said, what are you trying to break into managing? IT isn't just once thing....
