no mail in my inbox

i shut down my computer and the next day i switched on the PC,i opened my outlook express and found out, there were no mail in my inbox but sent mail and other folders are intact as it was before i shut down.i tried to import mail and activate by sending/receiving to no avail so would you be kind enough to tell me what caused my inbox to be empty!!!?
