No PPTP in Small Business Server 4.5

By rawright ·
Several years ago, I recommended SBS4.5 as a cost effective solution for our small company- I've been paying for that error ever since. The latest snag is that I need to add PPTP protocol on the server, and it doesn't exist on the CDs! The installation program insists that it can't find the files, then requests the CD labelled WinNT 4.0 Server, which also doesn't exist in the CD set. Somewhere around the house I have several evaluation copies of Win NT 4.0, and I have available a copy of WinNT Workstation - can I install the PPTP .dlls from these safely? My concern is that the Workstation version may not support the server functions of PPTP, or that the Evaluation edition may corrupt my SBS4.5 system into a time limited edition. Any suggestions?

According to technet, you can install PPTP
Take a look at

Between > and < should all be one line!

As far as I can remember,if SBS ever asks for Nt Server disc, use the SBS cd with i386 directory on it.

I've tried this repeatedly - it refuses to acknowledge that the files are there. In fact, a search on all three CDs doesn't find any of the requested files, either!

PPTP is protocol you can add on any NT system (even if its running workstation).
Here is how to do it:
1. In the networking control panel add a protolcol and choose PPTP.
2. In network service add the RAS service when asked what device you will use give it the PPTP device.

This isn't a version 4 SBS that was upgraded to 4.5 for free is it?
The files may be on the original 4.0 discs if it was.

Partially helpful... see my comments above - any ideas about how to get the files off of the CD? This is bizarre!

This is an upgrade from SBS4.0, and I did find the files on the 4.0 CD. But the installation routine refuses to copy them, reporting a non-critical error. These are files that have the same name as those that belong in PPTP, but the last characterof each extension is replaced by an underscore (ie - .dl_, .sy_, etc). I know this is a special format that I can't simply copy and rename, but I don't recall what the correct extraction process is.
